Former Australian tennis player Jelena Dokic posted a distraught picture on her Instagram with a very raw message about her trauma. Over the past few years, many prominent tennis players have opened up about their struggles with mental health. For the uninitiated, Jelena has been an advocate for mental health and has opened up about her struggles on many occasions.
Dokic has previously opened up about the abuse her father committed against her and how her mother stood by and watched as her father beat her with a belt. She even shared her story about how she struggled with depression and anxiety for years, which eventually pushed her towards almost committing suicide.
In a new post on Instagram, she spoke about how one should not be embarrassed about trauma and that there is no shame in crying or asking for help. She started off the post with a reassuring message about how she is okay and is just having one of those ‘bad days’. She said she got overwhelmed and had a breakdown, which led to her calling her friend to get help.
She wrote, “Know it’s ok to say that you are not ok and to let it all out and cry.’’
She also added that an emotional struggle and pain should not be hidden but spoken about, and that’s how you heal from the trauma and pain caused. ‘’Those that judge or shame people that share their stories are the ones that should be ashamed and embarrassed,’’ said Jelena.
By sharing her struggle with mental health and stability, she is giving hope and a voice to others to know they are not alone in their battle.
