Dokic, a former World No. 4, was only 17 years old when she faced physical and mental abuse from her father, who was also her coach. In her book ‘Unbreakable’, which was published in 2017, the Australian presenter and coach shared her story of the abuse she experienced.
Jelena Dokic recently shared on Instagram that she decided to post pictures of herself from the 2000 US Open with bruised and battered legs after speaking at a Domestic and Family Violence event. The former World No. 4 tennis player, who was coached by her father Damir Dokic, revealed that the injuries were inflicted on her when she was 17 years old after she lost a match. Her father reportedly kicked her in the shin all night while wearing sharp shoes.
“Swollen, bruised and bleeding shins from being beaten and kicked all night with sharp shoes right into my shins for losing a match. These images were taken more than 2 weeks later and I was still heavily bruised. I was 17 years old.To this day I still have sensitive and bumpy shins from this beating,” “From every wound, there is a scar and these are mine. I have survived but not everyone woman and girl has or will. And that’s the sad reality,” Dokic’s caption read.
In addition, Jelena Dokic addressed the societal stigma associated with domestic violence and the need for greater awareness. She emphasized that her own survival and success do not guarantee the safety and well-being of other women and girls who may be experiencing abuse. Furthermore, Dokic called on individuals to offer support and assistance to those in need, rather than turning a blind eye to the issue.
