Jelena Ostapenko, the Latvian pride, has stirred quite the drama during her recent post-match interview after her horrific loss against Coco Gauff. She leveled accusations on the tournament schedulers for informing her incorrectly about the match timings the previous day. The quarter-final match between Gauff and Ostapenko ended quickly for the Latvian’s liking. She lost to the youngster 6-0, 6-2. After a good run in the US Open, this kind of loss wasn’t expected from the one-time Grand Slam winner.

When asked about her comments in the interview, she blamed it on the match schedulers. “When I asked the day before, I was pretty sure I’d play a night session because that’s what they told me. When the schedule came out, I saw I was playing first match,” said Ostapenko. She was surprised by the change of timings and spoiled her preparation before the match.

Jelena attributed her straight-sets loss to Coco to being tired and unprepared for the match due to the late change in the match schedule. Tennis, like any sport, requires athletes to be well-prepared mentally ahead of their match to be at their best. However, in Jelena’s unfortunate case, a miscommunication disrupted her pre-match routines.

19-year-old Coco Gauff had a praiseworthy performance against Jelena Ostapenko in the quarter-finals of the US Open. However, Ostapenko’s shocking accusations have sparked fairness in the tournament. “I was surprised. Not in a good way,” said the Latvian, who was told the wrong match timings ahead of her quarter-final game. The tournament already has a reputation for favoring Americans in the tournament and this accusation does not reflect well on them.

Regardless of Ostapenko’s performance, the claim of misinformation about match timings is a serious allegation and the US Open must look into it. It remains to be seen if the organizers will respond to the allegations made.

Now, the American has made it to the semi-finals and is all set to face the Czech player Karolina Muchova and hopes to get a shot at the trophy. Coco Gauff has been remarkable this US Open and is in the form of her life. She will be a real threat to Muchova who is also fresh off a dominating victory. It will be a battle of young guns and the winner will be a major contender for the title.
