Latvian World No.21 Jelena Ostapenko says she has some advantages over the Polish World No.1 Iga Swiatek before their much anticipated fourth-round match of the US Open 2023. According to her, one of the main advantages is her positive head-to-head against the Polish World No.1 player. These two have played out in three matches before and it was the Latvian who came up with flying colours in all three of them.
According to Ostapenko, “I’m just gonna play my game. I will try to enjoy focusing on my game. It will be a difficult match for sure but I will play with no pressure. I am already in the fourth round and I’m just gonna try my best. She has been playing consistently and is the World No.1. So everyone will try to beat her and I will be trying to take advantage of that.”
The Latvian World No.21 Jelena Ostapenko is through to the fourth round after winning all three rounds in three sets. Every player she has faced until the fourth round was able to take at least a set off from the Latvian. So depending on the current form, Iga Swiatek who is yet to lose a set the whole tournament will be a difficult puzzle to crack for the Latvian.

Jelena Ostapenko last defeated Iga Swiatek in the Dubai Open 2022

The Latvian World No.21 Jelena Ostapenko last defeated Iga Swiatek in the Dubai open round of 16. It was the only match out of their three encounters where Swiatek was able to win a set-off against the Polish World No.1 player. Before the Dubai Open 2022, their two previous battles were in Birmingham Open 2019 and IndianWells Open 2021.
Even though the three-match deficit will be a hard stat for the Polish to look forward to, Swiatek will be a heavy favorite this time around. She has been in exceptional form and her third-round match against unseeded Slovenian player Kaja Juvan was a clear indication of her strong form. The score was 6-0, 6-1.
Ostapenko dealt with the home crowd favorite Bernarda Pera in the third round. That must have added confidence to her game. She even had some bizarre moments of screaming at the US Open crowd during her previous round match.
