Jelena and Serena

The Latvian tennis player, Jelena Ostapenko expresses her admiration for Serena Williams after her defeat in the round of 16. Jelena came into the limelight by winning the Roland Garros in 2017 and shocked the entire world. However, since her first and only Major title, she had never won another Grand Slam title. The 25-year-old saw early success in her career just at the age of 20 but failed to continue her form.

Nevertheless, she continues to participate regularly in both singles and doubles events and tries to make her mark at times. 2023 has been a busy year so far for her as she already took part in five tournaments. Both the Adelaide Internationals were not good in terms of results for her but she did a good job at the Australian Open. She reached the quarterfinals but lost to Elena Rybakina, however, she defeated Coco Gauff in the fourth round.

Speaking in the post-match interview she said “I think some girls are maybe too similar and they try to always be the same like the other ones. I think everyone has to be special, everyone has to be themselves. I love characters like Serena, such a big personality she is. Even the way she dresses on the court. Sometimes she wears c*azy outfits but it looks really good. Good on her, she knows how to impact people.”

Like here in Doha, that I lost my singles and I felt I was a better player and had to win it, I’m learning more from this matches, you know? I started well this year, if I keep it up and work hard I think I can play well at the Grand Slams.”
