Jelena Ostapenko, the current ranked WTA No.12, lost in the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International. The 26-year-old was up against the former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka. The match was well poised, with Azarenka winning the first set. The Latvian came back strongly in the second set, winning it 6-3. However, Azarenka kept her nerves and clinched the final set and won the match.
However, Jelena Ostapenko’s livid reactions to the umpires during the match gained much more attention than the results. It was the third set of the match when Ostapenko’s serve was called by the umpire to be hit by Victoria Azarenka on one bounce. However, the Latvian believed that the ball had bounced three times.

This caused a heated argument between the World No.12 and the umpires. Ostapenko said to the umpires,
You make so many mistakes. I never want you at my match again. You will never be at my match. You ruin my matches.
This heated exchange between Ostapenko and the umpires has gained mixed reactions from the fans. While some have praised the Latvian for standing against the mistakes of the umpires, others have bashed her for showing disrespect.
Jelena Ostapenko – a title contender for the Australian Open?
Ostapenko is undoubtedly one of the most talented young players in recent years. She is the first woman from her country to lift a Grand Slam title, which she did during the 2017 French Open.

The Latvian had a decent 2023 season. She reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open as well as the US Open. Besides, she won the Birmingham Classic as well as the quarterfinals of the China Open. Apart from this, her season was characterized by a series of early exits.
Thus, she will be eager to make it big in the 2024 season. She had a fairly good record in the hard courts of the Australian Open, losing a semi-final spot to Elena Rybakina last time around. With the mega event all set to commence in a few days, eyes would be upon her to see how the Latvian goes about her business.
