Jelena Ostapenko is certainly not among the calmest players on the WTA Tour. When she is upset, she lets her tantrums out on the court. The 2017 French Open champion was involved in a dispute with the chair umpire during her third-round encounter at the ongoing 2023 Italian Open.

Facing Daria Kasatkina in the third round, Ostapenko strongly opposed one of the calls by the chair umpire. The Latvian argued that the ball should be called out. However, the chair umpire Marija Cicak stuck to her decision, claiming that the ball just kissed the line.

Jelena Ostapenko managed to defeat Daria Kasatkina in three sets, as she completely changed gears in the final set. The 25-year-old handed a bagel to her Russian opponent in the decider, as she marched on into the fourth round. The match had its fair share of controversies, with Ostapenko’s argument with the chair umpire becoming the talking point on social media.

Jelena Ostapenko was relentlessly trying to prove her point to the chair umpire. Marija Cicak stuck to her decision and also came down to the court to prove her point. The Latvian was angered by the decision and commented that the chair umpire should never be at her match again. “You will never, ever be at my match again,” the Latvian was heard saying.

Marija Cicak remained stern, showing Ostapenko that a small fraction of the ball was inside the line. The Latvian was down 2-4 in the second set when this argument took place, which pretty much explains her frustration. She lost the second set by a score-line of 4-6, as the match was pushed into a decider.

Ostapenko has played some impressive tennis in Rome so far. She also defeated the 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova in the second round in straight sets. The 25-year-old has not had the best clay court season so far, as she has been knocked out in the second round of the Madrid Open. She was also defeated in the second round of the Stuttgart Open last month, losing to Ons Jabeur in three sets.
