American tennis ace Jessica Pegula is enjoying her time in Cancun as she has reached the finals in the 2023 WTA Finals. The 29-year-old beat reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff in the semifinals to reach her maiden final at the season-ending championships. But despite this, Pegula has not forgotten to be humble as she calls Gauff the present and future of American tennis.

When Pegula was asked about her role in American tennis, the 29-year-old said she was not the right person to ask this question as she did not know the answer. Pegula said that other American players would be able to answer this question better.

She then went on to reiterate her claims about doubles partner Coco Gauff being the present and future of American tennis. Notably, while Pegula had refused to put Gauff in Serena Williams’ shoes yet, she said that Gauff is the future star. Now, when the senior American was asked the same question after she beat Gauff in the semifinals, she reiterated her claims.

I don’t know what my role is. That’s a good question. Maybe another American player could tell me what my role is (smiling). Again, I think Coco is still the present & the future of U.S. tennis.
Jessica Pegula said in the press conference after her win against Coco Gauff.

I’m happy that I’m also at the top of the game & one of the leaders for all the Americans. That’s always really nice. That’s kind of where I see myself. I love being able to represent my country in that way. It’s an honor & really exciting. I’m not sure what my role is yet
Jessica Pegula said about herself.

Notably, Jessica Pegula, who had a horrendous outing in her maiden WTA Finals last year, has been undefeated in the tournament so far. She beat all three of her opponents in the group stage before taking down Gauff in the semis. She will now meet Iga Swiatek in the final, fighting for the ultimate prize.
