Jessica Pegula, who carries the weight of being the top-ranked American player on the WTA Rankings scale, recently opened up to the media. She talked about what it feels like to have all the focus on another fellow American player, Coco Gauff.
The World No.3 has won two 1000-level titles over the past two years. She had emerged as the title winner at the Canadian Open a few weeks back. The 29-year-old has achieved her career-high ranking thanks to her exceptional form on the court. She has also reached the quarter-finals of major Grand Slam titles.
In a press conference following her first-round win at the ongoing US Open, Pegula was asked about her reaction to the spotlight being on Coco Gauff at the US Open. “I don’t mind. She’s been winning a lot. I think she deserves a lot of that attention,” she claimed.
Pegula further explained that Gauff was young, is playing well and is “electric” to watch. “She loves the crowd. I don’t really have a preference. Either way, I just want to do the best I can. It’s nice that even though I’m the top American. I can’t imagine carrying a ton of pressure if it’s only me,” the 29-year-old claimed.
She revealed that it felt great knowing that there are many American players doing well and having chances of going deep into the Grand Slam. “It’s nice not feeling like I have to be the one to win the US Open when there are like 6 other girls that could do it,” she said.
Pegula defeated Camila Giorgi to advance into the second round of the tournament.
Jessica Pegula vs Patricia Tig in the second round

Top American seed, Jessica Pegula will be up against Romanian Patricia Tig in the second round of the US Open. The World No. 3 stands a good chance of winning the upcoming head-to-head against her opponent.
Pegula had earlier defeated Italy’s Camila Giorgi in an easy tussle. The 29-year-old beat the 67th seed over the course of two sets. Pegula booked her spot in the second round with a score of 6-2, 6-2 against Giorgi. Pegula is in great form this year and it is likely for her to go deep into the US Open. She might even stand a chance to win the prestigious Grand Slam.
