Jessica Pegula, one of the highly-ranked Americans and one of the favorites, won the recently concluded Korean Open. However, more interestingly, despite bagging the trophy, the tennis professional apologized to her fans. In the post-match interview, the American shares a heartwarming moment with the fans where she apologizes for her inability to speak Korean despite being half-Korean.
The finals of the Open took place between Jessica Pegula and Yue Yuan. The American, who had dominated in all her matches, held the momentum and easily cruised past the Chinese to win her second title of the season.
This was indeed a special victory for the American to win in her native land. The final score was 6-2, 6-3, with Yue not holding any answers to the questions thrown by Pegula. With that being said, it seems like it was a perfect finish for the 29-year-old after a memorable run in the tournament.
“For those that don’t know, I’m half Korean. “I’m sorry I don’t speak. But I do like Korean BBQ & kimchi so I guess that’s the Korean in me. But yes, My mom is Korean & she was adopted from here. It’s really special to be able to win here. Not a lot of people can say that,” reveals Pegula in the post-match ceremony.
Jessica Pegula caught up in an embarrassing moment during the photoshoot with tournament organizer
After a commanding victory in Korea, Jessica was posing with her trophy when the organizer wanted to take a few pictures with her. The organizer was urging Pegula to hold up her index finger to represent Hana Bank, and the American was absolutely clueless as to what exactly the organizer wanted her to do. As expected, this hilarious moment was caught on video, and fans are having a blast out of it.
The video instantly went viral on social media, eliciting a plethora of interesting reactions online.
Pegula won her second title of the season in her native soil, and she heartfully expresses her regards to the fans for cheering her along the way ever since her rankings have improved. The American also urged the fans to visit next year as well and cheer on her and the other girls to make this Korea Open a big success.
For context, Jessica is currently ranked No. 4 in the world. Now, with constant improvement in her gameplay, there is no denying that she has the potential to improve her rankings and possibly get the No. 1 spot soon.
