Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff are on the verge of matching a record set by Serena Williams and Venus Williams in 2008. The American duo needs just one more win to equal the Williams sisters’ record of 8+ wins against opponents ranked in the WTA’s top 10 in a season.
Pegula and Gauff have already made history this year by becoming the first American duo to score 8+ wins against top-10 opponents since the Williams sisters. They have yet another chance to redefine history if and when they take on World No. 6 players in their next match.
If Pegula and Gauff can ace it in their next match, the duo will join the Williams sisters as the only American to have 9+ wins against top-10 opponents in a season. This would be a remarkable feat, given the dominance of the Williams sisters in doubles tennis.
At the Beijing Olympics, the Williams sisters defeated the then-World No. 3 Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual in the final. They also won the Wimbledon title against Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur. The defeated duo were ranked eighth at the time. Earlier in the year, the Williams sisters made it to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. The sisters defeated Katarina Srebotnik and Ai Sugiyama, who were ranked second at the time.
Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff’s chances in the WTA Finals
Gauff suffered a blowout defeat to Iga Swiatek on matchday 2 of the WTA Finals, but she still some control over her destiny this tournament. A straight-sets victory over Marketa Vondrousova in her final round-robin match on Friday will guarantee her a spot in the semifinals.
Even a three-set victory would only see Gauff eliminated if Ons Jabeur beats Swiatek in straight sets with a significant game swing. Gauff’s set scores would also play a role in determining whether or not she is eliminated in this scenario.
Jessica Pegula has already clinched first place in the group by virtue of earlier straight-set victories against Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. Pegula extended her overall winning streak to eight matches with her two victories in Cancun. She won the Korean Open title last month and has won all six sets she’s played in Cancun so far.
