Canadian Open winner Jessica Pegula was on cloud nine after her intensive win by beating Liudmila Samsonova in the final. Though she didn’t even have to drop a single set and neither did the Russian have any answers to the American’s shots, she took her time to talk about her mother and her current situation. Kim Pegula, Jessica’s mother, underwent a heart attack last year, which affected her and her family intensively.
It was evident from Pegula’s performance last year that she was devastated by her mom’s issue. Having finally broken her trophyless streak at Montreal, she took the time to give the updates regarding her mother at the post-match conference. She said, “I won Guadalajara last year, which was the year the incident happened. This year we haven’t gotten to talk yet. She’s much more aware of what’s going on & in a much better place.”
She added, “I’m sure she watched & was very happy and, uh, the same for the rest of my family, so yeah, I’ll definitely be able to share that moment with her, you know, as soon as I’m out of here.” With her mother finally out of danger presently, Pegula is back at her best, and having beaten the top competitors in Canada such as Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek, she would be pumping with confidence ahead of the US Open.
How has Pegula fared so far this year?
Last year, due to the health issues of her mother, Jessica was well off from her best, which resulted in a massive drop in her performance. She has finally started to play tennis peacefully yet again after the condition of her mother improved this year. She was continuously getting the right starts in all the tournaments she was participating in but just wasn’t successful at converting that into trophies.
Her best finishes this year so far were the semi-final finishes at the Miami Open, Dubai Tennis Championships, Charleston Open, and Citi Open. She made it to the finals of the Qatar Open right at the start of the year but lost to Iga Swiatek. The only thing missing in her impressive gameplay this year was a silverware, and it finally came at the Canadian Open which will give her much-needed confidence for the future ahead.
