Jessica Pegula was denied a chance to lift her maiden WTA Finals title as Iga Swiatek defeated the American in the 2023 WTA Finals final. After remaining unbeaten for the first four games, Pegula was beaten in straight sets in the summit clash. However, the 29-year-old American was not too disappointed as she joked about ending the season through the ‘Iga Swiatek bakery factory’.

As Pegula got a bagel in the second set, she laughed at herself for that. Notably, Siwatek beat Pegula 6-1, 6-0 in one hour to claim the season-ending championship. With this defeat, Pegula’s one of the best seasons came to an end and the American celebrated it in style.

Pegula celebrated finishing as the runner-up at the 2023 WTA Finals with a drink with her friends and family. The 29-year-old then put a picture of her drink with a funny caption. Pegula joked about getting a bagel in her last set on the tour but also said that this season will go in her books.

Ended the year through the Iga bakery factory lol. Jokes aside, 2023 in the books.

A season for the books indeed for Jessica Pegula

Although Jessica Pegula could not pose a tough challenge to Iga Swiatek in the final of the 2023 WTA Finals, the 29-year-old American played some great tennis throughout the year. Despite playing the most number of matches on the tour (across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles), Pegula managed to win a few titles and stay injury-free.

The 29-year-old won two titles- WTA 1000 in Montreal and the Korea Open while keeping her win/loss record to 59/18. Pegula improved upon her last outing at the WTA Finals as she made it to the final this time around as compared to a group-stage exit last year. On her way to the final, she took down the likes of Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff.

She might have lost in the final but it was a top effort from the American considering no one counted her among the favorites to reach the final. The World No.5 ended her season with 9 wins out of the last ten matches played. The American also ensured she never dropped out of the top five in the rankings. This was only possible because of her hard work and consistency. And despite all the success, Pegula stays humble, calling Coco Gauff the future and present star of American tennis.
