Jessica Pegula, noted for her powerful game and fierce energy, was effusive in her support for Elina Svitolina‘s remarkable return to professional tennis after becoming a mother. Pegula stressed on Svitolina’s resilience and renewed perspective to the media ahead of their Citi Open match.

What she’s done coming back after giving birth and everything her country’s going through has been really amazing. I feel like she’s come back with a new perspective, and it’s going to be tough facing her on the court,” Pegula remarked.

Svitolina made her comeback after giving birth to her daughter back in October 2021. She has been able to capture the admiration of her fans by balancing her motherhood and her professional career. She has been representing Ukraine on every platform and has been very vocal about Russia’s invasion of her country. Her recent Wimbledon run won everyone’s hearts where she reached the semis only to lose to Marketa Vondrousova, who went on to become the champion.

Pegula shared a funny moment about their coincidental choice of clothes as she prepares to face Svitolina. The match will promise to be a riveting confrontation between two fierce athletes.

Pegula defeated fellow countrywoman Peyton Stearns in one hour and 23 minutes, 6-3, 6-4. Pursuing her second Washington title, she proved to be a formidable opponent, breaking Stearns’ service six times.

Pegula set the tone for the match right away, utilizing her first serve to great success. She won a remarkable 72% of her first-serve points and 62% of Stearns’ second-serve games. While Stearns was able to win 52% of her second-serve points and 66% of her return points, her overall consistency and skill proved decisive. She saved two of the five break points she faced, proving her ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Pegula’s ability to control the tempo and dominate play was on display throughout the match, as she finished with three more winners than Stearns’ nine and committed ten fewer unforced errors.
