In recent times, the WTA Tour has been dominated by three players, namely Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. However, outside the trio, it’s Jessica Pegula who has been extremely impressive and is currently ranked 4th in the world behind the trio. Pegula entered the Citi Open as the top seed last week, however, failed at the semi-final stage against Maria Sakkari in a three-set contest.
Unlike most on the Tour, Pegula is a billionaire. Pegula’s parents Terry and Kim are owners of Buffalo Bills of the National Football League and Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League. Even with that out in the open, the fact is that Pegula has made her name in the tennis world because of her own talent. Unfortunately, any loss of hers gets the fans to point out her billionaire status.
She played very well throughout the week but couldn’t really replicate her form in the semi-final against Sakkari. It was a three-set match, but the sets she lost heavily went in Sakkari’s favor. The final score was 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Being the top seed, most expected her to breeze through the event. Especially with the heavy trio of Swiatek, Sabalenka, and Rybakina, not being there Pegula was the favorite.
Fans point out Pegula’s billionaire status for her loss

The loss irked her fans and they couldn’t help but blame the richness that surrounds her. They feel that she doesn’t have the same passion and hunger to win events as many others do. This is a major reason she is not able to make it deep into Grand Slam and big events. Have a look at the tweets:
Pegula would want to keep this loss behind her and head to Montreal with a positive mindset. The North American hard courts provide her with the advantage, of being local in most events. She has a great opportunity in two Masters events to have a much-needed deep run just before the big Grand Slam in New York.
