Holger Rune, the 20-year-old Danish player, has taken the tennis world by storm after his victory against Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Italian Open. Holger Rune is now considered a serious favorite to win the Italian Open in 2023.
In a recent Tennis Channel Live show, former world No. 1 tennis player, Jim Courier talked about Holger Rune’s victory, making him a serious contender for the 2023 French Open too. He expressed that the Italian quarterfinal victory was a big deal for Rune. It is known that Novak Djokovic was preparing for the Roland Garros and that the Italian Open was not his priority. Djokovic is a favorite to win the 2023 French Open, and Holger Rune beating him should give him the confidence he needs.
Jim Courier expressed that Djokovic was using the Italian Open to prepare for France and Rune defeating him should provide Rune with enough confidence to perform.“Rune has to feel like the work he’s been putting in is really paying off. He made the quarterfinals of the last year’s Roland-Garros as he was a shadow of the player that he is now. So, that is how good he is and has definitely got the confidence.”, Jim Courier said.
Jim Courier also felt that Rune could be one of the players to win the 2023 Roland Garros. He also added that Rune doesn’t have any scar tissue from losing the title after getting really close to winning, which sets him apart from a player like Jannik Sinner, even though Sinner has more ‘pedigree’. Andy Roddick also praised Rune for showing the world his quality.
Holger Rune’s goal is to win a Slam in 2023
Holger Rune has made it to the semi-finals of the 2023 Italian Open and is now considered a heavy favorite to win it. After Rune defeated Fabio Fognini in the third round of the Italian Open, he revealed his goal of winning a Grand Slam in 2023.
“My goal is a Slam for this year. You know, I won a Masters 1000 now in Paris, and I think the next step is a Slam, and I know it takes a lot, and maybe it happens or maybe it doesn’t, but I’m going to go for it 100 percent,” said Rune.
He is one of the top prospects in tennis. He has time on his side as he is just 20, and he has shown the world that he is ready after defeating Novak Djokovic in the Italian Open in 2023. Rune expressed that he feels great both mentally and physically for the Roland Garros 2023.
