Jim Courier, former 4-time Grand Slam champion recently compared the Serbian great Novak Djokovic’s record at the Australian Open with Rafael Nadal’s French Open record. Over the past few years, the 36-year-old has had a phenomenal run at the season-opening Grand Slam, placing him in a position to be compared with the ‘King of Clay’.
Novak Djokovic has won 10 times in the Australian Open with back-to-back titles since 2019 except in 2022 when he wasn’t allowed to play.
“Betting against Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open has become almost the equivalent of betting against Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros. Rafa has won 14 times on Parisian clay. 10 times for Novak in Melbourne and he showed us nothing today or this week that would deter, I think, any of us from thinking that he can’t win an 11th time.” said Courier via Tennis Channel.
Rafael Nadal has always been known as the ‘King of Clay’ for his exceptional record of 14 titles in this tournament. He holds the record of 112 wins and only 3 losses at this tournament making him one of the greatest players on the court.
Andy Roddick and Nick Kyrgios also pick Novak Djokovic as a favorite for the Australian Open 2024
When we talk about the Australian Open, one can never forget the iconic Novak Djokovic’s run. He has always been an icon for this tournament and sets the tone for the other Grand Slams to follow. Along with Jim Courier, players like Nick Kyrgios and Andy Roddick also had a few positive words for the Serbian.
“It doesn’t mean I don’t believe someone else has a chance but I will not put my money against Djokovic. Certainly haven’t changed my mind after the last couple of days and what we saw against Alcaraz and Sinner, I go, Novak,” said Roddick on Djokovic.
Even the Australian home boy, Nick Kyrgios is for Djokovic to win the Open at his home ground. Kyrgios also recognized the record of Novak at this court and how comfortable he is in the courts of Australia. He considers his prediction boring because Djokovic is untouchable in this tournament and predicts the 36-year-old to win the tournament yet again.
