Former French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, once recognized as one of the top players in the sport, has finally picked his pick for the ultimate GOAT status of the game. For the uninitiated, Tsonga is from the same era as the Big 3: Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.
In his candid conversation with the media outlet The Lorraine Republican, Tsonga talked about the three most celebrated tennis players of all time. Giving his take on the ongoing GOAT debate, the former player considered the Serbian miles ahead of his longtime rivals, Federer and Nadal. That’s not all; he even went on to predict that Djokovic would end his illustrious career with 28 Grand Slam titles.
Tsonga said:
The GOAT is Djokovic. And I think he can go for 25, 26, 27… maybe 28 Grand Slam tournaments. You never know.
Back in the day, Tsonga used to speak about how he would have made a mark in the sport had these three not existed. He further added:
Let's be honest: I would have loved it if these three guys hadn't existed. When you are in the elite year after year and you see that you can reach the top 5, but you can't get beyond that because they're ahead.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s career recap in a nutshell
Former World No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has been one of the most consistent players back in the day, always making it to the later stages of the Major tournaments he used to feature in.
The fans watching his stats should not be fooled by the number of titles he has achieved in his career. He failed to rack up a single Grand Slam title in his prime years, always getting knocked out by the ‘Big-3’ in the concluding stages.
His biggest achievements have been his Masters wins at the 2008 Paris Masters and the 2015 Canadian Masters. Apart from this, he has also won 16 different titles at the ATP 500 and 250 levels. He used to rule the Metz Open back in the day, having won the competition a record four times, and it was also the same competition where he won his last career title.
