American tennis veteran John Isner bid his final goodbye to the sport after his exit from the 2023 US Open following his second-round defeat against fellow American tennis player Michael Mmoh despite a sensational effort. The match ended 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 7-6 (10-7) in Mmoh’s favor. Isner started off brilliantly, registering back-to-back wins in the first two sets, but sadly could not go the distance as Mmoh made a brilliant comeback.
“Yeah, it’s tough. You know, I like to think I work as hard as I can. This is why I’ve worked as hard as I have my whole life to play in atmospheres like this. Of course, I don’t win them all, as we know. Just like today, to play in front of this crowd and have the support I have is pretty special. So thank you,” said the 38-year-old after the match. He was in tears as he bid goodbye to the crowd in the post-match interview.
John Isner has a career-high ranking of World No. 8 in singles and No. 14 in doubles. He made his professional tennis debut in the summer of 2007. Back then, he was ranked World No. 839 and needed a wild card entry to the main draw of every single tournament.
His first trophy came in the USA F14 Futures, where he performed exceptionally well and defeated the first, second, and third seeds to win the tournament. After a 17-year career as a professional tennis player, he finally announced his retirement after his US Open exit. He had announced that it would be his last tournament before its start.
John Isner calls Andy Roddick an ‘absolute bulldog’ with little talent
As 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of Andy Roddick’s triumph in the 2023 US Open, John Isner recently praised the now-retired Grand Slam winner in one of his interviews. However, upon being asked further about Andy, John opined that he was never a talented guy but worked hard to get to the top.
“I think he would admit, obviously he was talented, but I don’t think he was the most talented guy,” said the 38-year-old. He further called him an absolute bulldog on the court and said he took care of himself and trained exceptionally hard. Isner even went on to say that Andy Roddick was perhaps the hardest worker he has ever seen in the sport.
