Former tennis player and coach John McEnroe has recently talked about Emma Raducanu yet again hinting that the young English star might be drifting away from her goal and that she might soon be on the verge of downfall. Emma Raducanu who won the 2021 US Open had been struggling with injuries and also has been going through a rough patch, being not able to get back to her best.

McEnroe who himself turned out to be a superstar at the age of 20 after winning the 1979 US Open fears that Raducanu might turn out to be a “one-Slam wonder”. Raducanu who is of the same age now has gained a lot of recognition thereby attracting several endorsement deals with Porsche, Tiffany, Evian, Nike, Vodafone, and Dior. These numerous deals took her earnings to an approximate total of £22m last year which McEnroe feels might be a great deal of distraction.

He had his ways of what and how Raducanu should settle for the next couple of months saying, “I am not sure I’m the right guy to ask in a way because it was driving me pretty crazy. Some of mine was self-inflicted whereas I don’t really see her as being that way. She has been through a lot of coaches and obviously, her family is going to be involved in these decisions.

“She’s a kid. And there are people around her and they make decisions only from the standpoint of athletes being pretty superstitious. Emma’s under a lot more pressure from sponsors and just her ranking and how that all works to get back sooner. Look, she’s won a Major which 99 per cent of players or more can’t say, but you don’t want to be that one-hit wonder either,” added McEnroe further.

Emma Raducanu has been facing a slump in the last couple of months surviving injury and also lacking form and confidence. She lastly played at the Stuttgart Open way back in April losing to Jelena Ostapenko right in the first round. At the Miami Open, she lost against Bianca Andreescu also in the first round. Raducanu showed some form at the Indian Wells Masters making it to the round of 16 stage. However, he lost to Iga Swiatek on straight sets.

After suffering from injury since last October, the Brit started off fresh this year at the ASB Classic only to retire in the second round against Viktoria Kuzmova. Up next at the Australian Open, her bad form continued as she got knocked out by Coco Gauff in the second round as well. It is quite sad to see a player of her stature face such a downfall and all her fans will want her to get back to the fierce competitive mindset she posed in the year 2021.
