John McEnroe-led Team World toppled Team Europe 13-2 to win the 2023 Laver Cup title. This was their second consecutive title win. The doubles pair of Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton sealed the win for Team World as they beat the doubles pair of Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets of 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5).
Earlier on Day 1 and Day 2, Team World completely outplayed Team Europe, as they lost only one match (two points) combined on both days. Other than Tommy Paul’s singles match against Casper Ruud, Team World did not lose a single match, meaning they reached thirteen points with as many as three matches left on Day 3.
It was a total team effort from Team World as each of the six players involved contributed at least one point. While Shelton, Tiafoe, Francisco Cerundolo, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Taylor Fritz remained unbeaten, Tommy Paul, who lost his singles did chip in with a point as he paired up with Tiafoe to beat Arthur Fils and Andrey Rublev on Day 1.
John McEnroe wants to nurture Team World’s second Laver Cup title win
As his team emerged victorious for a second consecutive year after being on the opposite side of the spectrum in the first four editions, John McEnroe was over the moon already. While he claimed to have kicked some a**, the former American ace said that he wants his team to nurture this win.
“These guys, I just tried to sort of figure out what makes them tick in a very short period of time. If I could add that tiny little bit, hopefully, I bring some energy and passion. I think the guys here know I love the event and I believe in this event. That’s what it’s all about. I’ve been around for a while. To me, this is something that I wasn’t expecting, so we’ve got to nurture this,” said McEnroe (via the Laver Cup website) after the win.
The Team World captain also announced that his team has their eyes set on next year’s title while admitting that it would be tougher for them with the likes of Carlos Alcaraz expected to return to Team Europe’s lineup. Notably, Team Europe has been fielding a relatively weaker lineup than it used to until 2021. But with the return of Alcaraz, it will get a major boost, as the Spaniard has an impeccable record on the tour as of late.
