Tennis great John McEnroe always has been loose with his mouth yet adored by fans because of his sheer honesty. However, there was one occasion when McEnroe probably did not do justice by being outspoken in press when he revealed an offer from ex-president Donald Trump to play Serena or Venus Williams in an exhibition match.

Prior to this statement, McEnroe had also once spoken about how he thought Serena would be No.700 in the world if she were to play on the ATP Tour. Serena made sure she responded to McEnroe on Twitter, making her point in perfect sense.

Serena asked McEnroe to refrain from making comments about her that weren’t fact-based.

Interestingly, McEnroe also didn’t offer much details of when Trump had made the offer to him about playing Serena, where and on what date. In any case, McEnroe probably shouldn’t have revealed a private conversation between him and another individual that could affect a third individual.

What’s more? While McEnroe revealed the offer from Trump, he also said he himself wasn’t interested in playing Serena. Why reveal the details then and tease fans of a great matchup that didn’t happen?

“Over the course of time, people including our now-president—he wasn’t president at the time—have offered me sums of money to play Serena or Venus,” said McEnroe.

“I don’t know why I’m always the guy they want to play … But at any rate, I believe I have some ability left and I had pride when I played. Why don’t they ask her to play Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal on clay, see how that goes?” he had added.

It was in the year 2017 when Trump made a nasty and fiery remark against the NFL players regarding their involvement in the US National Anthem kneeling protests. McEnroe went on to express his disgust and even questioned the credibility and responsibility of Trump towards the citizens of his country. He blamed the former President for the lack of awareness.

McEnroe said during an interview that “The problem we have with Trump is that he is separating people and the job of a President is to bring people together, not to separate them. I don’t know when this anthem tradition began. Of course, I’d prefer it to be something else and not see footballers kneeling during the anthem, but perhaps they’re so desperate that they feel they have to do this at this time.“

He further said, “At first, I didn’t think it was a good idea but now I think it may help bring about change faster. I’m in Europe and everyone is talking about it. Everything that happens in my country resonates.“

Well, what can we say. McEnroe is known to be someone who never shies away from expressing his views in public. But he got to be careful about sensitive matters and things involving other people, right? Please let us know what you think in the comments section below.
