Seven-time Grand Slam title winner John McEnroe has been criticized many times in the past for his favoritism over certain players and for treating other players in a bad way. He repeated this mistake again at the ongoing Wimbledon Championships while commentating for BBC Sports during the matches of several unseeded players.

As expected, fans haven’t taken this lightly at all, as every player playing at the All England Club this month must be treated the same, irrespective of their rank or reputation. Fans have taken to Twitter to express their opinion that the former tennis player should be allowed to comment only when two highly ranked players are playing against one another.

McEnroe treats players according to their fame and reputation and it is no secret that he only favors certain players such as Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz and studies them before commentating.

This biased attitude can lead to a lot of trouble for both BBC Sports and John himself as fans are rising in protest against him saying, “Johnny Mac is too out of touch to do effective commentary. I rarely find him insightful.”

How McEnroe was warned about his behavior previously in the past?

John McEnroe did something like this previously, during a fourth-round match at the 2003 Roland Garros. It was a high-stakes encounter between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Sebastian Ofner, and McEnroe mocked the Austrian, saying, “Who is this guy”. The fans didn’t take this lightly at all and this publicity stunt backfired on Eurosport.

Ofner was in blazing form during that tournament and did it the hard way, going past the qualifying round and winning match after match to finally reach the fourth round. However, despite such an impeccable performance, John went on to call him a “career minor leaguer“. Fans brutally bashed John for his comments and made sure that he wouldn’t repeat this mistake again, but it seems like Johnny Mac hasn’t learned.
