The Wimbledon Championships fortnight came to a satisfactory end. The women’s singles was won by the unseeded Marketa Vondrousova. On the other hand, the men’s singles trophy was taken by Carlos Alcaraz after a thriller of an encounter against Novak Djokovic in five sets. However, there is some rather interesting news that has come from the broadcasting panel regarding this year’s event.

The BBC had published a list of their highest earners during 2023 Wimbledon and that has got everyone talking. A seven-time Grand Slam champion appeared on the list. Yes, John McEnroe is one of the highest earners of the BBC.

The American is earning a lot for the two weeks of co-commentating he is doing. The list had all those names who earned more than 178000 pounds. According to the list, McEnroe earned 210000 pounds for this year’s Wimbledon fortnight which is 30000 pounds more than what he earned last year.

However, this was something that surprised the fans. Wimbledon’s evergreen presenter Sue Barker, who retired last year was earning between 185000 and 189999 last year. She was in fact covering both Wimbledon and Queens. So this was very amusing to many that McEnroe is considerably earning more. Is it because of the fact that he is a man? This is a topic that will be discussed for a while.

This year’s Championships saw Claire Balding take on what Sue Barker did for so many years. However, she was not given the assignment of interviewing the winner and Runner-Up on Centre Court following the men’s singles final.

Surprisingly she was not considered for it and the job was given to former player Annabel Croft. Furthermore to this, John McEnroe was also not given a chance to speak and analyze the match with Balding as he had his own US media commitments. The Broadcasting team needs to review its members and the roles assigned to them.

It hasn’t been as smooth as it always used to be and thus one may see many changes at the event from next year onwards. Perhaps a change in personnel. It could also be the addition or deduction of certain roles at the event. Luckily the tennis was at its best and it saved the day for Ian Hewitt, the Chairman of the All-England Club. Hopefully, fans see an even better fortnight next year. For now, the focus shifts to the American hard courts.
