Polish tennis ace Iga Swiatek is the World No. 1 player with four Grand Slam titles to her credit. The 22-year-old has already achieved so much that she can be counted among the top players to have played the sport. Renowned sports journalist Jon Wertheim is of a similar opinion as he heaped massive praise on the Polish star, calling her a generational talent.
As Swiatek won her second Indian Wells Open title as she beat Maria Sakkari in the final, Wertheim hailed the Pole for her consistency at the highest level. He highlighted how the 22-year-old has won 19 out of the 22 finals she has played so far in her career.
Wertheim was so impressed that he went on to claim that Iga Swiatek is right after Serena Williams in terms of the best women’s tennis players. He said that while Venus Williams and Justin Henin have a special place, Swiatek is up there after 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams.
What is left to say about Iga? I'll give you this one, last 20 years, we will take Venus (Williams) out of the equation, maybe Justine Henin, after Serena (Williams), I am not sure there has been a better player. This is a generational player here.Jon Werthein said on the Served with Andy Roddick podcast.
Jon Wertheim in awe of Iga Swiatek’s consistency
Jon Wertheim did not stop there. He went on to count Iga Swiatek’s achievements and justify his claim about her being a generational talent. He gushed about the 22-year-old enjoying her dominance on the tour.
He also compared Swiatek to Rafael Nadal. Wertheim hailed the 22-year-old for her modesty and claimed that she tries to avoid talking a lot about her achievements.
This was title number 19th. She has won 19 finals out of 22, she has won four majors, and now she has won her 8th 1000-level title. She did her usual target of a bagel set to end things off appropriately. She does not help us much. I mean we were talking about Rafa being modest, I think she is in the same team self-effacement.Wertheim said.
Notably, this is not the first time Wertheim has heaped praise on the Polish tennis ace. He has hailed Swiatek as a generational talent even before. Meanwhile, Andy Roddick also agreed with Wertheim as the former American tennis ace hailed Swiatek.
Roddick had his way of praising the youngster as he compared Swiatek with Maria Sharapova, Lindsey Davenport, and Kim Klister. The former World No. 1 said that “she is a bad woman”.
