Juan Carlos Ferrero, the coach of Carlos Alcaraz, is currently the most successful coach in the tennis circuit. But attaining that status took a lot of grit and hard work and also sacrificing a glamorous lifestyle. Prior to coaching Alcaraz, he coached Alexander Zverev for 8 months in 2017. But Ferrero and Zverev’s coaching relationship was a rocky one right from the start. Ferrero was very vocal about his dislike toward Zverev’s remaining coaching team. He was eventually fired by Zverev over a major disagreement.
In a recent interview, Ferrero explained why he chose to coach a rising player in Alcaraz after coaching a jet setter, Zverev. “It was a big decision to take.. was the opposite of what I lived with Zverev in the past. It wasn’t anymore a life of private jets and high-standard hotels.” Ferrero said.
Explaining how he landed the gig to coach Alcaraz, Ferrero added, “His family is a tennis family because his father was a pro. It helped me to get it. And his manager, Albert Molina, is a guy I know for a long time. I have a very good relationship with him. “
Juan Carlos Ferrero is often referred to as “The man who build Alcaraz”. Ferrero, highlighting how he enjoys a clean slate, said, “To build a project from the beginning was something important for me.”.

What went wrong between Juan Carlos Ferrero and Alexander Zverev?
Ferrero’s dissatisfaction with Zverev’s behavior went beyond just his unpunctuality. One of the major challenges Ferrero claimed was that Zverev’s off-court behavior was not in sync with what he was hoping for. Ferrero believed that a player’s off-court behavior is just as important as their on-court performance. He had several complaints about Zverev’s lifestyle, eating habits, and working relationships with others on the team.
Zverev has had other big tennis names that have coached him in the past. Other than Ferrero, another former world no.1, Ivan Lendl, and former world no. 3, David Ferrer, have coached the German. However, just like Ferrero, the other 2 also had off-court challenges with him and they eventually parted ways with the player.
