“Just want to have fun” Iga Swiatek shuts down reports of participating in the Poland Open to start a new winning streak
Iga Swiatek
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek will return to the Tour this week at the ongoing 2022 Poland Open, the WTA-250 event which will be the last claycourt event for the season for tournaments of250 and above categories. Having missed last year’s edition, Iga will be playing this year in what is the second edition of the tournament and with no loss recorded on clay this season so far, she will be the favourite going into the tournament.
Swiatek is 16-0 on clay and has won 3 titles already, the WTA-500 event in Stuttgart where she took home a Porsche along with the trophy, she then made a successful title defence at the 2022 Italian Open and then won her second Grand Slam title at the 2022 French Open justifying her tag as one of the best claycourt players on the WTA tour. She has dropped just 2-sets on the Tour this year on Clay and has dished out 5 bagels as well on the surface.
“I want to play in Warsaw as long as possible”: Iga Swiatek
Swiatek has however attracted criticism for playing in a weak field at the tournament in Warsaw where the next highest ranked player after Iga is World no. 45 Caroline Garcia. With Iga’s 37-match winning streak coming to an end with her 3rd round defeat at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, comments have been directed that to start a new streak she is playing on Clay instead of practising for the upcoming hardcourt season.
“I want to play in Warsaw as long as possible. This is a special tournament for me, playing at home. I know someone may expect me to start another winning streak but I just want to have fun on the court and present the best tennis in Poland as much as possible, preferably until the final,” said Swiatek in her pre-match press conference shutting down reports and revealing her true motive as the tournament in Warsaw is the only event in Poland on the WTA Calendar in categories of 250 and above.
