American fan-favorite, Coco Gauff clashed with Elise Mertens on Friday for a third-round match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 2023 US Open event held several A-list celebrities in attendance, including Grammy award-winning artist, Justin Bieber and six-time NBA All-Star player, Jimmy Butler.
The teenager lost the first set to the World No. 32 but made a stunning comeback in the following sets. Mertens suffered a 6-3, 3-6,0-6 defeat at the hands of Gauff.
The third-round match on Friday was attended by various big names. World No. 10, Frances Tiafoe joined the star-studded gathering after his third-round win over Adrian Mannarino. The Miami Heat player, Jimmy Butler was there in the stadium as well to rally behind the teen. Justin Bieber, along with his wife, model, and influencer Hailey Bieber, were also there.
Other stars who attended the event included Hollywood actress, Katie Holmes. Vogue’s Editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, marked her presence at Gaff’s match yet again. Former US President, Barack Obama with former First Lady Michelle Obama had visited previously to attend Gauff’s first-round match.
Coco Gauff drew inspiration from Jimmy Butler after Wimbledon loss
Jimmy Butler is known for his on-court mentality, fierce gameplay, and for giving his best in matches. While talking to the media earlier this week, Gauff talked about how Butler inspired her to come back after Wimbledon’s loss. She talked about how the NBA star saw that she enjoyed the game and the competition that came with it and advised her to keep playing the sport.
“He has that mentality really of, you know, no matter what the odds are against him, he’s gonna give it his all. He pretty much helped the Heat,” Gauff said in an interview with the New York Daily News.
The World No. 6 has entered into the ‘Round of 16’ at the US Open with her third-round win. She’ll play her next match for a spot in the quarter-finals.
