Katie Boulter lavished praise on former British world number one Emma Raducanu by calling her an inspiration when she emerged victorious at the 2021 US Open as a qualifier just at the age of 18. Boulter also had backed Raducanu when later admitted that she wished she never had won the US Open title.
Boulter recently overtook Raducanu as the new British number one and after being given the wildcard, is hoping for a strong run at the impending Wimbledon Championships, starting July 3. Raducanu on the other hand will miss playing at SW19, as she is recuperating from hand and ankle surgery which has troubled Raducanu a lot during her matches in the recent past.
“If we didn’t have Emma then I don’t think that these girls would be pushing through and I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from her. What she did was absolutely incredible and I don’t think it’ll ever be emulated again,” Boulter said (via The Telegraph) while recalling Raducanu’s 2021 US Open victory.
‘It was quite the moment and she’s a very special girl. I tried to take a lot of inspiration and tried to do what she was doing,” she added.
Katie Boulter features on Tatler’s cover alongside Alex de Minaur
Last year at Wimbledon, Katie Boulter could play till the third round after losing easily in straight sets to Harmony Tan. Praising her second-round win, her boyfriend Alex de Minaur gave a shoutout post his win at a Wimbledon match, saying “Can we just talk about Katie Boulter?”.
Boulter admitted that it was embarrassing to Tatler magazine as she and her Australian boyfriend were featured as the cover stars for August’s issue. In the interview with Tatler, Boulter expressed that she wants to emulate Emma Raducanu’s success and wants to climb up to the top position of the WTA rankings. “That’s my ultimate dream. And to be number one in the world,” she told Tatler magazine.
After winning the Nottingham Open by beating fellow Brit Jodie Anna Burrage in the final with the score of 6-3, 6-3, Boulter lost to Zhu Lin at the Birmingham Classic. And on Tuesday (June 27), her Eastbourne International campaign was brought to an end in the first round by 30th seed Petra Martic 6-6, 7-5.
