Kim Clijsters, the former world number 1 and 4-time Grand Slam champion had finally decided to retire for good from the sport. She was present on the US Open tennis podcast, where the matter of building a perfect tennis player was discussed. The panelists in the podcast were asked to build a perfect tennis player if they could choose different parts of the game from different players through history.

When Clijsters was asked to make her pick for the components of a perfect tennis player, she began with the serve. For services, she chose Serena Williams, widely considered among the greatest tennis players ever. She has won 23 Grand Slam titles in singles, the highest in the Open Era. After Serena’s powerful serve, for the return she picked herself saying: “Maybe I’ll take mine. That’s maybe the one. I just trusted my instinct of reading my opponent’s serve, which is something I felt very comfortable with. So let me just keep that confidence in that shot.”

Clijsters moved forward with her choice of forehand. For that she chose Steffi Graf, the legendary world number 1, saying: “I’m going to go with Steffi’s forehand because, in my childhood, that was like the shot that I wanted to hit. I wanted to have the footwork to run around. So I’m going to use Steffi’s forehand.”

For the netplay, she chose Martina Navratilova, who holds the record for the highest number of titles in the Open Era. Clijsters said: “I played legends and I played doubles against Navratilova. I mean, she was already older when I played her and was still incredible. I will pick Martina’s volleys.”

For the mental toughness, she chose the current world number 1, Iga Swiatek. Clijsters reasoned: “I think I’m going to take, just to have like a current player, I’m going to take Iga. Yeah just with what she’s been doing, for the last year, especially recently. Just the mental aspect of her improving her game to where it is now and how much dedication and how much passion and motivaton and everything that takes, and mental strength that takes. She just has it together there right? And yes, I’ll take that part of her.”
