“Playing against him is always an amazing challenge”- Rafael Nadal
Novak Djokovic did not play at the same level as he did last year when he beat Nadal, and it was obvious almost away. As Djokovic battled to keep up with Nadal in the opening set, Nadal cruised to a 6-2 victory. There were too many misses and too few winners, and his serve did very little damage. Nadal had a 3-0 lead in the second set, but Djokovic came back to make it 4-3.
He won that set, turning this into a true battle, which it was. In the third set, Nadal took an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. As Nadal cruised to a 6-2 victory, Novak was flat and reverted to missing a lot. Novak exerted early pressure on Nadal and went out to a 3-0 lead in the third set, which was a true struggle between the two.
Djokovic was serving for the set at 5-3, and he had two set points in that game, but he couldn’t convert either. Nadal fought back and the set was decided in a tiebreak. Nadal took a 3-0 and a 6-1 lead before winning 7-4. With 56 victories and only 43 errors, this was an outstanding performance. Djokovic’s 48 and 53 points were insufficient.
In his on-court interview, Rafael Nadal said, “I’m very emotional. For me, it’s incredible to play here. This feeling is incredible for me. Playing against him is always an amazing challenge… To win against Novak, there is only one way, to play your best from the first point until the last.”
