Coco Gauff, the teen prodigy from America has been quite consistent with her performances throughout the season. She reached her maiden appearance in the finals of the Grand Slam tournaments at the French Open but lost to Iga Swiatek. She is yet to win a Grand Slam title but has slowly etched her name in the history of tennis.
Jessica Pegula won her first title of the year at the Guadalajara Open defeating Maria Sakkari in straight sets. She has dropped only one set throughout the tournament which came in the first-round match against the Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. She defeated top-seed players to win her second WTA singles title.
With their consistent performances throughout the season, Gauff along with her doubles partner and compatriot Pegula became the first two Americans to enter the Top 5 of the rankings since Serena Williams and Venus Williams in 2010 with Serena ranked 2nd and Venus ranked 4th.
Both the young Americans had won their first doubles titles together at the Qatar Open. They both had also won the doubles title at the 2022 San Diego Open which was their third title of the season together. Pegula rose two places to a career-best No. 3 while the 18-year-old moved up three places from No. 7 to No. 4.

Gauff became the first teenager to be ranked inside the Top 4 of both singles and doubles while maintaining her second spot in the WTA doubles rankings. On the other hand, Pegula had entered already the Top 5 for his good performances despite a quarter-final exit at the US Open. They both have qualified for the WTA Finals scheduled to take place between 31 October to 7th November.
As Gauff and Pegula recreated history for their country, people on social media couldn’t contain their excitement and hailed both players. Everyone wished them luck in their future endeavors while acknowledging their efforts. Some wished them to keep shining while some feel happy to see some players playing the level of tennis as the Williams sisters.
