“Let the guy come in and play in the US,” John McEnroe fumes over the ‘ridiculous’ US Open ban on Novak Djokovic, says ‘politicians are getting in the way’
John McEnroe and Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic won his fourth consecutive Wimbledon title by beating Nick Kyrgios in the final of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships in four sets 4-6,6-3,6-4,7-6(3) and in the process, matched Pete Sampras’ 7 Wimbledon titles. He is just one Wimbledon title away from equalling Roger Federer’s record of 8 Wimbledon titles and has also overtaken the Swiss by winning his 21st major title.
Djokovic is just one major shy of Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 grand slam titles. But unfortunately, it looks like he won’t be gunning for his 22nd grand slam title this year. As things stand, Djokovic isn’t allowed to enter the USA due to his vaccination status and hence won’t be allowed to compete at the US Open.
Djokovic has once again made it very clear that despite everything he’ll lose, he won’t get vaccinated. The ruling, like at the Australian Open, has had a lot of backlash from both fans and former players. Many believe that Djokovic is being subjected to political drama and it is unfair to impose something on a person against his will.
‘These politicians are getting in the way too much’: John McEnroe
American tennis legend John McEnroe spoke about the situation in ESPN’s broadcast of the Wimbledon final when Djokovic was posing with the trophy. He said that politicians are getting in the way too much: be it in Australia or now in the USA. He urged the government to let Djokovic come and play in the USA and called the current ruling ‘ridiculous’. He then said that he doesn’t make the decisions and hoped someone would make the right decision.
“These politicians are getting in the way too much. They did it in Australia. Let’s let the guy come in and play in the U.S. I mean come on. This is ridiculous,” McEnroe said. “But I don’t make those decisions. I hope someone makes the right one and allows him to play. That’s my personal opinion.”
He said that doing frequent Covid tests could be a way in which unvaccinated players can play. “You can agree to be tested. I don’t know. There’s gotta be a way around this, but we’ll wait and see. That’s not what it’s about right now,” he said.
