World No. 35, Leylah Fernandez, was up against her toughest opponent so far, Sara Sorribes. The match went on for over 3 hours as both sets were played until the tiebreak.

However, Leylah won both sets, 7-6(8) and 7-6(7). The last point was the highlight of the game, as Fernandez ran all over the court to save the point and win a tiebreak for her country.

I was nervous, I probably had a few little heart attacks, but in the end, the match was very exciting and fun to play. The last time I played against Sara, the match was tough and she won in the end, so this Wednesday, I'm super happy to have been able to win.
Leylah said in the press meet after the match.

Leylah Fernandez expresses pride in representing her country

Canadian World No. 35 recently expressed pride in representing her country and how much it means to her.

I’m always excited to be part of this Canada team. We have a great support staff and the girls here are super amazing. They always bring out the best in me and I have a lot of pride when I play for my country.

As the daughter of a professional footballer, she has always learned from her father, who preaches that the biggest pride for an athlete is to represent their country.

So the Canadian continues by saying that every time she steps on the court, she wants to put her best self out there and win matches for her country. The other members of Team Canada won more points for their country to beat Spain and advance.

Marina Stakusic gave her team a huge headstart with a point, and Leylah soon backed it up with another win. In the doubles, Eugenie Bouchard shone along with her partner Gabriela to whitewash the team.
