Leylah Fernandez is now aiming for at least one Grand Slam championship each season. The 2021 US Open finalist expressed her ambition yet cautious approach to this aim, understanding the hurdles provided by an extremely skilled field.
“For me, my big goal is always to win a Grand Slam every year. It’s always going to be tough. There’s a lot of great, very talented players,” said Fernandez. She further stressed the necessity of taking one point and one event at a time and emphasized the need to maintain a positive mindset and properly execute her game plan.
While Fernandez aims to break into the top 10, she is committed to remaining humble and grounded. When asked about her father’s coaching method, she stated, “My coach – my dad – has always said that every day is a new day, and we start from zero, especially in tennis.” Her viewpoint is consistent with her commitment to hard effort. She brings her best attitude to the court and retains the style of play that has given her success. (H/T: South China Morning Post)

Leylah Fernandez clinches redemption with 2023 Hong Kong Open victory
Leylah Fernandez won the 2023 Hong Kong Open, defeating Katerina Siniakova in a dramatic final. This historic victory was Fernandez’s first in 594 days.
She was a finalist in the 2021 US Open, but recently experienced a difficult stretch over the next 19 months. Her perseverance and steadfast dedication to the sport, however, were rewarded on the Hong Kong courts. The 21-year-old acknowledged the significance of this victory in a post-match interview.
“We had a very, very hard past couple of years. My family, my parents, my coach, and my performance coach stayed by my side. They motivated me to keep going and the hard work is paying off. Hopefully, we can keep going this way,” she said.
The Hong Kong Open was Fernandez’s third career title, and she still has a long way to go. Her form had been dreadful since the 2021 US Open, and this was her first championship since then. However, it appears that she has made a return and would like to keep the momentum going in her favor.
