Canadian teen tennis ace Leylah Fernandez feels she and Emma Raducanu can return to the top level and dominate the tour despite their poor performances in the last few tournaments. Fernandez made the statement after clinching her first title in 19 months, at the Hong Kong Open. The 21-year-old defeated Katerina Siniakova after conceding the opening set. Fernandez won the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
En route to her victory, the Canadian defeated the likes of Victoria Azarenka, Mirra Andreeva, Linda Fruhvirtova, Anna Blinkova, and finally Siniakova. This win propelled her in the top 50 in the WTA rankings where she had fallen from No. 13 to 60th. Fernandez revealed that it was a tough period for her battling injuries. But now, as she seems to have found her mojo back, the Canadian is ready to compete for Grand Slam titles.
Leylah Fernandez also talked about her 2021 US Open finals opponent Emma Raducanu, who has been absent from the tour for a long time now. Heaping praise on the Briton, Fernandez showed faith in her and claimed that Raducanu will bounce back soon. The 21-year-old talked about how 2021 was a special period for both of them.
“I was able to beat a couple of top-10 players, ex-champions. Emma, she came through the qualifying, so we both had to go through some difficulties, and afterwards, I think it was hard on both of us adjusting to the new life,” she said. (H/T: The Post)
Leylah Fernandez bestows faith in hard-working Emma Raducanu
The Canadian then talked about Emma Raducanu’s comeback and bestowed faith in the Briton. Leylah Fernandez said that Raducanu will come back strong and will play some great tennis. She also claimed that the WTA and women’s tennis need Raducanu as she has something special in her.
“I know Emma is working hard, I know she is hungry, she has something to prove, so I’m sure she’s going to come back and play some great tennis. Hopefully we do see her because she is great for the sport. She has got something special for the WTA and for women’s tennis. Hopefully, we can both compete at the highest level once again side by side,” the Canadian said.
It is worth mentioning that Emma Raducanu has not won anything significant ever since her historic win at the 2021 US Open. In fact, she has been out of the tour for over six months now. This absence has cost Raducanu dearly in the rankings as she has fallen to No.282 in the world.
