“Life went on but it was never the same” Elina Svitolina mourns the war in Ukraine

Gael Monfils and Elina Monfils(Svitolina) are a power couple in the tennis world. Elina Svitolina is a Ukrainian tennis player and a former world number 3. She has 16 career titles and she is the first Ukrainian woman to reach the top 10 rankings. Her husband Gael Monfils has won 11 career titles and has had the highest ranking of number 6 in the world. He recently announced that he won’t be playing in the Monte-Carlo Masters due to a foot injury and advised rest. He has once said that his wife gave him the strength to carry on.

Elina Svitolina is the winner of the 2018 WTA Finals and the 2021 Olympic bronze medallist. She had recently taken some time off due to the Russia-Ukraine War. Since the war began, Elina has competed in three tournaments: the 2022 Monterrey Open, the 2022 Indian Wells Open, and the 2022 Miami Open.

Following the Miami Open, Elina declared that she will be taking an indefinite break from tennis because she feels it difficult to compete while her nation is in turmoil. She has now taken to send a strong message via social media. “Life went on, but it was never the same again…” she wrote sharing a picture of herself.

Gael Monfils has already said that his wife’s mental fortitude is amazing, as she was competing in the tournaments even as her country was suffering brutally. The fans have also shown their support to Elina in her decision to take some time off and get some peace and pray for the well-being of her country.

The fans would like to see her back on the courts but they understand how difficult it must be to see the people suffering, the cities she has called her home being destroyed by the shells and mortars, monuments and historical places being decimated, and the people fighting for their country. Elina Svitolina is a fighter and we hope that she finds strength in these tough times.
