Iga Swiatek has proven to the world just why she is the highest-ranked female tennis player at the moment. The Polish sensation defeated Karolina Muchova in a thrilling three-setter at the Philippe Chatrier Stadium to lift the French Open title again. The win was a brilliant display of resilience and mental toughness by the 22-year-old.
Swiatek adds this victory to her 2020 and 2022 French Open titles. She has now won all four of the Grand Slam finals she has played. The Poland player also has the 2022 US Open title to her name. Swiatek has come a long way since participating in her first Grand Slam tournament in 2019. She has grown exponentially and established a dominance reminiscent of legends like Serena Williams in the WTA circuit.
The final started with Swiatek dominating. She won the first three games of the first set and seemed to be sailing. She was not fazed by Muchova winning two games and closed the set 6-2. The tennis world expected her to close the championship game out in straight sets as she had done all three times before. But Muchova proved a demanding customer. After Swiatek again went 3-0 up in the second set, the Czech player played brilliantly to bring it to 3-3.
At 4-4, Muchova played a brilliant game and was on the cusp of taking the game to a third set. But Swiatek forced a seven-game set, which Muchova secured in the end. The final game was equally close. But Swiatek used her experience of previous finals and remained steady to win the deciding set 6-4 and bring it home. As a result, she widened an already massive gap to World Number 2 Aryna Sabalenka in the WTA rankings.
