US Open 2023: Emma Raducanu the most prominent absentee
Emma Raducanu was the first qualifier (male or female) to win a Grand Slam tournament in the Open Era. The British player instantly rose to fame with her surprise win at the 2021 US Open. Since then, Raducanu has struggled with form and injuries. As a result, the 2021 champion withdrew from the upcoming US Open. She is still not fit following a wrist surgery although she would likely have required a wildcard if she was fit due to her ranking.
7-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams made headlines after she received a wildcard for the US Open 2023. This will be Williams’ record-extending 24th appearance at the US Open. Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki is also among the wild card entrants.
The main draw for the 2023 US Open is set for Thursday, August 24. The draw will be held after the completion of the qualifying rounds. Qualifying will start on August 22. There will be 128 players in the main draw with 32 of them seeded. 16 of the 128 players will come through qualifying.
