In the National Bank Open championship, Liudmila Samsonova faced a tough loss to Jessica Pegula with a score of 6-1, 6-0 in a challenging final. Samsonova also spoke about the tough WTA scheduling, which seemed to have an impact.
Having to compete in back-to-back matches in under two hours took a toll on Samsonova, contributing to her loss in the finals. It’s worth noting that she had previously triumphed in a challenging semi-final match against world number three Elena Rybakina, overcoming the odds with a score of 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Samsonova was taken aback when she had to play two matches in a row. She called it “strange” that organizers did not regard the players’ well-being. No player, in her opinion, should be forced to play two matches on the same day, let alone the semifinal and final, regardless of the weather.
“The fact is that everyone saw that the forecast was at 6 p.m. would be raining, so I knew that. But, of course, it’s strange that the people doesn’t care so much about us, you know, because if you know that you must I think, this is my opinion, to make a schedule where it’s possible to play because we already made two matches in one day,” Liudmila Samsonova said at the press conference.
She also added, “You know, I didn’t have time to regenerate because I was to the physio room trying to tape all my body, and it takes one hour for this. So I don’t know what to say. I was out of the court and then again in, and I don’t know. It was strange.”
Liudmila Samsonova said she tried her best, but it wasn’t her day
Samsonova acknowledged Pegula’s strength, referring to her as a “tough” adversary. Despite putting forth her best effort against the World No. 4, Samsonova recognized that it wasn’t sufficient on that particular night.
“I knew Jessica. I know the way she plays. I know that she’s a tough opponent, and I knew also that I don’t have so much energy. So, you know, I tried to do my best, but it was not enough today,” Liudmila Samsonova said.
Samsonova might face challenges in recovering from the recent tough matches. However, with the Cincinnati Masters coming up after the US Open, she’ll likely be eager to regain her form as quickly as possible. As for whether she’ll make it to the next finals, it’s hard to predict with certainty in the unpredictable world of sports.
