Nick Kyrgios can’t escape drama. Despite an injury forcing him out, his decision is still being looked upon dubiously. Kyrgios had shown a great deal of excitement to represent Australia in the 2023 United Cup. However, minutes before the team’s press conference, the team was informed that Kyrgios won’t be joining them.

Citing a niggle, Kyrgios chose to withdraw from the tournament rather than play at a lower fitness level. What went wrong for the Aussie was the timing of his decision and announcement. His teammates and Captain Sam Stosur were also gathering themselves when the press conference began and discussed the whole subject.

Addressing the fiasco, Lleyton Hewitt, Captain of the Australian Davis Cup Team and Co-captain of the United Cup, presented his thought in a recent press conference. Hewitt was at his diplomatic best but did inject a doubt that the whole situation wasn’t smooth as they have made it look.

“It was pretty tough for everyone. It was more probably a lack of communication, I think, for these guys not knowing. If it was just worrying Nick it’s one thing. But when it revolves around the team and other people and their preparation for playing as well as possibly as they can in not just in this event but leading into the Australian Open,” said Hewitt.

When asked further on what could have been the best way to communicate, the former World No. 1 cheekily said, “Probably just responding, it’s a normal way of doing it.”

With Nick Kyrgios carrying the hopes of many Australian fans going into the United Cup, it was rather dissapointing to see him withdraw. The tournament’s director had however come out in defense of Kyrgios. He brought everyone’s attention to the fact that knowing about his injury, Kyrgios was waiting till the last moment to take a call on his withdrawal.

With debates emerging yet again about whether it was the right or the wrong decision, Kyrgios has not addressed anything. He instead took to his Twitter demanding the apology of his critics after Netflix announced that the first episode of ‘Break Point’ will feature the Aussie particularly.
