‘Looking forward to the atmosphere that’s going to be around,’ Emma Raducanu excited for upcoming grass season on home soil after French Open exit
Emma Raducanu
Poor luck continues for US Open champion Emma Raducanu as she once again bows out at the early stages of a big tournament. She lost to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round of the 2022 French Open in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 1-6 to mark the end of her clay-court season. The best result of the clay-court season for Raducanu was a quarterfinal outing at Stuttgart.
Against Sasnovich, the Brit looked in control at the start but lost momentum completely after winning the first set. She wasn’t able to clear the ball from the baseline at ease and struggled a lot from the forehand side. She eventually lost the last two sets very easily and only managed to give a game each.
Raducanu next eyes the grass-court season on home soil. She is expected to play at least 2 tune-up tournaments- Nottingham/Birmingham and Eastbourne, before returning to Wimbledon– the place where she broke out to the world a year ago. She spoke about gearing up for the grass-court season in the post-match press conference.
‘It’s going to be really nice to go home and play on home turf’: Emma Raducanu
Raducanu said that it’ll be very nice to play on home grass but also will be very strange as she will be transitioning from clay to grass so quickly for the first time.
“It’s going to be really nice to go home and play on home turf, on the home grass,” she said. “It is going to be a little bit strange in the beginning, because I have played on clay courts for so long now, I feel like it’s been weeks. Going onto a grass court I’m probably going to be a bit shocked at first.”
She also mentioned that having home fans cheering for her is something she’s looking forward too as she’ll be more popular this year compared to her visit last time around courtesy of her exponential rise.
“I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the fans at home, and just all the support. Last year I experienced a little taste of it, but I feel like this year might be a bit more. I’m just really looking forward to the atmosphere that’s going to be around,” she said.
