Lorenzo Musetti unbothered by the exponential rise of Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune, shoots down question on starting a rivalry with them
Holger Rune, Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Musetti
Lorenzo Musetti is one of the most talented tennis players on the ATP tennis circuit. Currently ranked as World No.23 in the ATP rankings, he has taken some giant strides on the tennis court this year. Often he is compared with the World No.10 Holger Rune and World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz. However, unlike the Spaniard or the Dane, the Italian is yet to win a Grand Slam title or an ATP 1000 tournament.
It is expected that he must be under a lot of pressure. However, in a recent interview, the Italian disclosed that he does not think a comparison of him with the 2022 Paris Masters champion or 2022 US Open winner is right. Also, he does not think that he needs to become a rival of both on the tennis circuit. He thinks, he just needs to improve himself.
“They (Alcaraz and Rune) are neither a stimulant nor a nightmare. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this year, it’s to think only of myself without looking at others. The resolution for 2023 is to be even more “selfish,” so to speak. I’m not interested in becoming the rival of Alcaraz or Rune, I only want to become Musetti in its best possible version,” he said.

What to expect from Lorenzo Musetti in 2023 season?
Lorenzo Musetti had a fine season. He competed against top seeds and won against them a few times this year. The Italian won the 2022 Hamburg European Open, beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final. He also won the 2022 Tennis Napoli Cup by defeating Italy’s No.1 tennis player Matteo Berrettini. He also played the important semi-final match for Italy against Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada at the 2022 Davis Cup but ended up losing the match.
However, he could not do much in the Grand Slams. His best performance in any major this year came in at the US Open. He reached the third round of this tournament but lost to Ilya Ivashka of Belarus.Going into the next season, he would like to improve his performance at the Grand Slams. The Italian needs to consistently reach the later stages of the tournaments to get a chance to win the title.
Also, he needs to be consistent with his form and free-from injuries. He will have to compete with the top seeds in the tournament. The 20-year-old may have to compete with Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz to win tournaments. He has to be ready for every challenge. He would also like to improve his performances in multi-nation competitions such as the Davis Cup and ATP Cup.
Lorenzo Musetti is going to take part in the inaugural edition of the United Cup where he will play side-by-side with Matteo Berrettini and Martina Trevisan amongst other fellow compatriots for Italy.
