“Lost passion for Tennis way too early” Tennis Twitter lashes out at Naomi Osaka after a shocking first-round exit at the Western & Southern Open
Naomi Osaka
Naomi Osaka, the former world number one, has been struggling with her unsatisfactory performances since the French Open in 2021 due to injuries and poor form, especially with battling mental health issues. She hasn’t managed to make it to go past the fourth round since her performance at the Miami Open where she managed to reach the finals but lost to the World number one Iga Swiatek in straight sets.
The two-time US Open champion and four-time Grand Slam finalist had skipped this year’s Wimbledon due to an Achilles injury. She had her return at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic event but lost in the Round of 16 to Coco Gauff. She had a major setback at the Canadian Open when she had to hand over a walkover to Kaia Kanepi due to a back injury that resisted her to play freely as she was in a lot of pain even after medical assistance. Keeping in mind the US Open, she decided to retire from the match keeping her hopes alive to play at the US Open which starts on 29 August.
She was looking to have a good season at the Western & Southern Open as part of the US Open preparations but it hit a major roadblock when she faced a disappointing and shocking defeat in straight sets to China’s Zhang Shuai 6-4,7-5 in the first round at Cincinnati. It was her third tournament coming back from the Achilles injury and another show of poor and inconsistent performance with a sluggish start as the match ended in just one hour and 15 minutes.
Twitter fans react to another shocking exit by Naomi Osaka
Osaka’s poor performances have been under scrutiny and were under a lot of pressure to get back to winning backs. But she faced another disastrous defeat in the Cincinnati Open has added a lot of concern over the Japanese form and longevity of her carer. Twitter fans express their anger and disappointment upon finding Osaka’s first-round exit as they were hopeful of her strong comeback.
