The former World No.7 Madison Keys has withdrawn from the 2024 edition of the Australian Open. She was going to enter the mega event in Melbourne Park as the World No. 13.
However, owing to a shoulder injury, the American announced via her social media handles her withdrawal from the Australian Open. Keys joined Karolina Muchova in the list of high-profile withdrawals from this season of the Australian Open.
Madison Keys posted a Tweet on her handle, which said,
Hi everyone… Unfortunately, I’ve been struggling with a shoulder injury & have been advised by my medical staff to withdraw from the Australian Open this year. This obviously isn’t the best news to start the tennis season. But I also know I’m making the right choice for my body.
The fans have shown immense love and support for her post. Keys also expressed her love for the fans of Melbourne and thanked them for showing immense love and respect.
The American was in a very good momentum in the last season. She reached the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon as well as the semi-finals of the US Open. In the US Open, she lost to the eventual finalist Aryna Sabalenka.
How are rivalries shaping up amidst some high-profile withdrawals in the Australian Open?
The withdrawal of Madison Keys will be a big miss for the women’s division in the Australian Open. With the momentum and form she was in, Keys was expected to go big in Melbourne Park. The American has a good record in the Australian Open where she reached the semi-finals twice in 2015 and 2022, losing both times to eventual winners Serena Williams and Ashleigh Barty.

Thus, with Keys missing out, the rivalries become more interesting and open. With the tournament set to commence on 14th January, Aryna Sabalenka will be looking to defend her title. Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Naomi Osaka are some of the tough competitors that can be a threat to her reign.
