Timing is everything in life. Most of the timings in our lives are for our own good. However, a few instances of aptly timed comments, changes or even movements can be the cause of a long discussion. The 2023 Madrid Open has gained immense popularity in the tennis world. Most would expect the three set thrillers to be the reason for all this.

No, that’s certainly not the reason. It’s more to do with a social issue that has crept into the tennis world once again last week. The last 10 days have seen an entire cake debacle, a controversial ‘match scheduling’ comment in the finale speech of Iga Swiatek, the cut on the women’s doubles final speeches and a lot more.

There is a common thread that ties together the incidents mentioned above: a concern over gender bias in sports. Despite tournament director Feliciano Lopez‘s assertion that such claims are unfounded and the Madrid event is unbiased, a recent change in the Madrid finale has reignited this debate. While the change may have seemed minor, it had significant implications in the larger context of gender equality in sports.

The usual ball models for the event who wore crop tops and mini skirts had changed their wardrobe for the finale. The ball models looked more like the traditional ball kids. The top remained similar, however, the mini skirts were replaced by longish shorts which sort of covered the knee part. It’s still unclear why this change took place. However recalling what all has happened in the week, this change certainly was timed aptly. The general demand certainly is for the ball models to be replaced by traditional ball kids so that nothing apart from tennis makes the headlines.

Getting back to the tennis played, this has been yet another Carlos Alcaraz week. He was certainly excellent throughout last year, where he eventually lifted the US Open and became World No. 1. It was a pity that he couldn’t take part in this year’s Australian Open due to injury, however, as soon the Spaniard stepped on tour, he made sure he covered for the Grand Slam down under. Reaching multiple finals and winning big titles such as the Indian Wells, Barcelona and Madrid Open has brought the current World no. 2 in a great position to win his second Grand Slam at the French Open at the end of this month.

The last 10 days were just phenomenal for the young sensation as he saw himself lift yet another master’s crown. He faced Jan-Lennard Struff in the final and beat the German in a tough three set contest. 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 was the final score line, as Alcaraz was crowned champion. Fans would hope that Alcaraz continues his form as the Tour moves to Rome next week and eventually to Paris for the big clay prize.
