Daniil Medvedev, the defending champion in Mallorca, will begin his title defense and continues his quest for the first ATP title of the season. Though Medvedev is playing extremely well on grass, reaching two consecutive finals in two tournaments, he has been defeated badly in both the finals, losing to world number 205 Tim Van Rijthoven in the Libema Open and Hubert Hurkacz in the Halle Open. There seems to be a mental block with Medvedev that his level suddenly drops far below in the final. The world number 1 would like to defend his title in Mallorca and will begin the quest against compatriot Aslan Karatsev.

Aslan Karatsev is a former Australian Open quarterfinalist and though his career-high ranking is a paltry 17, he is still a force to be reckoned with. Though his game on grass is not acclaimed, he would like to start making some changes and would try to upset an already discombobulated top seed. Karatsev would be counting on the fact that Medvedev’s loss to Hurkacz in the finals would leave him vulnerable.

It’s a shocking revelation that Daniil Medvedev has never won a match against Aslan Karatsev. In their junior career, Karatsev beat Medvedev 2-0 and at the ATP Tour, he was a 1-0 score against Medvedev. Their only ATP tour match was played on the clay court which is admittedly Medvedev’s least favorite surface and as the two Russians square off, Medvedev will be looking to tie the head-to-head score 1-1.

Daniil Medvedev has a very well-suited game to grass courts and he has also been extremely precise and ruthless in both the tournaments, his only misstep came in the finals of the events. Even though Karatsev has a positive head-to-head score against Medvedev, he is not known to do well on grass, being ousted from the Wimbledon in the first round itself and having made it to the final of a grass-court tournament. Karatsev would have to conjure up a miracle or Medvedev should collapse otherwise, it would be an easy enough match for Medvedev.
