Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari made it to the WTA Finals in Cancun as the last player, seeded at No. 8. The 28-year-old lost her second match in the group stage round of the year-ending WTA tournament to top Kazakh player Elena Rybakina. A clip of the Greek having a conversation with her coach has emerged on the internet.
Maria Sakkari lost her second consecutive match in a row at the ongoing WTA tournament. The former World No. 3 had a disappointing start to the year-ending WTA Finals. She lost her opening match, scoring just one game in a match against Aryna Sabalenka, who emerged victorious with a score of 6-0, 6-1.
The Greek ace was across the net from World No. 4, Elena Rybakina, for her second match in the robin-round format. Sakkari, however, struggled to keep up with the Kazakh in the first set. During a changeover prior to the commencement of the first set, the 28-year-old’s coach, Tom Hill, was seen trying to uplift her spirits.
Sakkari, however, vented out her frustration as she said, “I’m done,” to Hill. She, however, made a stellar comeback in the second set as a thrilling battle ensued.
Sakkari went on to claim the second set with a lead of 1 game (7-6). However, despite her strong form, the Greek lost the match to Rybakina by a narrow margin. Rybakina won the clash with a score of 6-0, 6-7, 7-6.
Maria Sakkari tears up following her match against Aryna Sabalenka
Maria Sakkari faced defeat in her first-round match at the ongoing WTA Finals in Cancun to World No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka. In a match that lasted 74 minutes, Sabalenka demolished Sakkari as she beat the player to a 6-0 defeat in the first set.
The player got emotional following her loss in the first round. In an on-court interview following the match, the player admitted she wasn’t playing her best game that day. She said:
It’s not nice. But no one likes to get chopped on the court.
With her back-to-back losses at the group stage, Sakkari’s elimination from the tournament appears eminent. She will take on America’s Jessica Pegula next.
