Maria Sakkari not ‘obsessing’ over qualifying for the WTA Finals as the Guadalajara title boosts her chances

Maria Sakkari is no less than a fighter. There was a phase when she thought of taking a break from the Tour, but now the tide has turned in her favour. She made an incredible comeback after winning the Guadalajara Open for the first time in 4 years.
Maria Sakkari was in tears after her US Open loss as she lost to a 71-ranked player, Rebeka Masarova. She was in tears after her match and decided to take a break from the Tour. Her win at Guadalajara qualifies her for the WTA finals. Talking about the WTA finals, Sakkari stated, “Going into a tournament as a winner the week before is something I haven’t felt in a long time.”
Maria Sakkari was really happy to win the biggest title of her career. With this win, she also ended a 4-year title drought as she won the second title and the first WTA 1000 title of her career with her win over Caroline Dolehide. She also talked about the difficult conditions in Tokyo, referring to the upcoming WTA finals event taking place in Japan this year. She added, “I know Tokyo will be tough with the traveling, the time difference and the conditions. But I’m just going to try my best.”
Maria Sakkari also admitted that she is not obsessing over qualifying for the WTA finals in Tokyo. She expressed that she would give it her best shot but also mentioned that she was really happy with her win at the Guadalajara Open. She added, ” Hopefully I can make the Finals, but even if I don’t, this week has been a huge win for me. If I qualify for the Finals, amazing. If I don’t, I’ll have a longer break. That’s how I see it right now. It’s not something I’m obsessed with.
Maria Sakkari dedicates Guadalajara title to her late grandfather
Maria Sakkari won the Guadalajara Open, defeating Caroline Dolehide in straight sets to win her maiden WTA 1000 title. In the post-match interview, she said that she dedicates this win to her late grandfather, who had passed away last year.
Maria’s grandfather was a tennis player himself, who played for the national team in the Davis Cup in the year 1964. This win will really mean a lot to her and her family, as it comes after 4 years of not winning any title. She also made a fighting comeback after her US Open loss this year.
