A day after both Greek tennis players Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas dropped from the Top-10 in their respective world rankings, a Greek tennis outlet reported on social media labeling it a ‘historic low’. As expected, Maria Sakkari was not happy with the negative remark, as she blasted the Greek outlet for its unthoughtful opinion.
Tsitsipas and Sakkari had cemented their place in the Top 10 of the ATP and WTA rankings. But the duo were pushed out of the elite top when a refreshed ranking was released on Monday.
Notably, the updated ranking ended Stefanos Tsitsipas’ over four-and-a-half-year streak as an elite Top 10 player since making the list in March 2019. Meanwhile, Sakkari also dropped for the first time in two and a half years.
A Greek tennis outlet on X called the duo’s misfortune a historic low for Greek tennis in recent years.
A historic low for Greece in the men's and women's rankings in the last two and a half years. @steftsitsipas and @mariasakkari dropped out of the top 10 both occupying 11th place in #ATPRankings and #WTARankings respectively as of today. The caption on X read (Translated from Greek).
Interestingly enough, Maria Sakkari didn’t take the comment well, as she blasted the reporting page for its unthoughtful writing.
Did you give this much thought before writing it? Because of this, tennis will not go forward in our country. You are laughable! She wrote on X (Translated from Greek).
With that being said, both Greek players now sit in 11th position in the respective world rankings. Maria Sakkari is hoping to bounce back at once at the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championship while Tsitsipas competes at the Los Cabos Open in Mexico.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari remain Greece’s highest-ranked players despite the drop
Despite recent disappointing setbacks, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari are still Greece’s highest-ranked players.
The duo have previously reached their career high of World No. 3 in their respective rankings. Last year, Stefanos Tsitsipas reached the final of the Australian Open, two years after reaching his first Grand Slam final at the French Open.
Maria Sakkari’s best major tournament run was in 2021 when she reached the semifinals of the US Open and French Open. She became the first Greek women’s player to feature in a Grand Slam last four. Last year, she won her first WTA Masters 1000 in Guadalajara.
